When arriving at the walk you need to check off all the names on the roll call before starting the walk.

BHM members can just be ticked off and the list be used to update the register after the walk.

Where a walker is marked as "Other" - please scan their QR code. If they don't have it ask them to please bring it next time. It can be found on their membership card or in the Ramblers smartphone app.

For anyone else make a list and send to David.

It is your decision whether to wait for anyone who is running late or start the walk at 10:00.

If someone doesn't show, I usually try phoning them and will extend the start time by up to 10 minutes, if they are near.

Take a head count and check it at appropriate points e.g. when restarting after a break.

Consider appointing a Back Marker, ideally give them a whistle and make sure you have each other's phone numbers.

Try to keep in visual contact of the Back Marker, and encourage him/her to reciprocate.

In the event that some walkers opt to chose a different route or to turn back to the start, make it clear that they are no longer part of the official Ramblers walk.

When turning at junctions ensure that the whole group turns - if the group is strung out wait till you can see the Back Marker.

Take care with transitions, for example, when exiting a stile directly onto a road - make sure people are aware of the risk and maybe stay by the stile until everyone is through.

When the group gets strung out, take a short break to let the tail end people catch up - it's not an endurance test.

If people are lagging behind when you come to a rest, don't just start again as they arrive - they need to rest too!

Take especial care not to lose people when passing through densely vegetated areas where the path is unclear - keep the group closed up and maintain contact with the Back Marker.

In the unlikely event that someone gets separated from the main group, try to phone them. If you can contact them check if they have What3Words - if so, you can navigate to them using W3W.

SAFETY DURING THE WALK

Everyone is responsible for their own safety, but in a risky situation you need to lead the group.

I've been in the group seven years and the worst injury was someone being scratched by barb wire - but it's best to be prepared.

The group once came across a barrier of several tree trunks that were wet and slippery. The group was about to attempt to clamber over, but I stopped them because there was a risk of someone slipping and potentially breaking a leg - better to make a detour than a 999 call!

In the unlikely event of a serious injury, call the emergency services using 999 or 112. 112 is not network specific and is more likely to get through even if you apparently have no signal on your phone. The emergency services will take your What3Words location.

If it is a serious injury it may make sense for someone to stay with the injured person while the rest of the group ploughs on or just returns to the start - particularly if it is cold and raining - but make sure the group has a competent navigator/leader.

Now use the menu to select the option for the  Leader's role "after the walk".
