If you are interested in becoming a Walk Leader, this article sets out what you need to do.

Be aware - before you make a commitment - you can always shadow the Walk Leader on a walk or two, or lead with an experienced Walk Leader as backup - contact David either way to arrange.

BEFORE THE WALK

Gather the names of all the people who intend to walk, using the WhatsApp poll.

This can be captured using Windows PrtSc feature (Print Screen)  to copy the walkers and then paste them into a Word document.

All walkers on the WhatsApp poll wil be members, either of BHM or another group.

Assuming you are using OutdoorActive to navigate, you need download the route before leaving home (while you have an Internet connection).

To download the route you must have the OutdoorActive Pro upgrade which incurs a small cost.

If you can't download the route be sure to have a map or paper copy of the route.

You should have the What3Words app on your phone. In the unlikely event of an emergency, you can give the emergency services the three words for the location so they can find you with ease.

What3Words can also be useful locate someone who has become separated from the main group.

There are First Aid apps available and you might want to have one of these available.

Make sure your phone is waterproof or you have a waterproof case.

Make sure you have enough battery life and/or a recharging unit.

If possible, complete the Ramblers' First Aid training.

Complete the mandatory walk leaders training.

Set your contact preferences -  this is so that your contact details display on the walks calendar for any walk you are leading.

Carry:

  • a small rucksack
  • First Aid kit - be sure it contains a sling, large wound pad and some plasters ranging from small to quite large
  • a tic remover is optional
  • Kendall Mint Cake or other high energy food in case a walker runs out of energy - the mint cake doesn't get stale and is solid energy, easily digestible
  • Ordance Survey map covering the route - as backup
  • Compass - again as backup - you can get a phone app

Now use the menu to select the option for the  Leader's role "during the walk".
